• Washington School HSA Committees



    Bagel Day – Coordinate bagel orders as well as volunteers to help prepare bagels for students on early dismissal days (early mornings only).

    Bike Rodeo – The bike rodeo is a one day event for third graders only, which teaches and emphasizes bike skills and safety.  The Bike Rodeo chair is responsible for organizing and coordinating the activities with Detective Paul Mazzeo of the West Caldwell Police Department, as well as with the third grade teachers. The bike rodeo is usually held in early May. 

    Carnival – The Washington School H.S.A. Carnival takes place on one afternoon in late September and is our way of kicking off the new school year!  Carnival Co-chairs are responsible for putting together and running this super fun event that all the kids look forward to.  Duties include but are not limited to: booking the inflatable rides, food and drink for purchase (usually pizza, ice cream, baked goods, popcorn/chips etc., water), DJ or other entertainment/activities, securing and coordinating volunteers. 

    Cultural Arts – Help select cultural events for student assemblies. Topics vary and include performing arts, science, and history

    CWC Municipal Alliance Liaison – West Caldwell Detective Paul Mazzeo is the Chair for the CWC Municipal Alliance and each HSA has been requested to have representation on this community committee.  This committee supports the D.A.R.E school programs, Bridge counselors (GCMS & Elementary), Parents education series, and Peer leadership in our schools.  The role of this chair would be to attend MAC monthly meetings, communicate CWC MAC programs and initiatives to the HSA, and bring program ideas from HSA to CWCMAC.

    Discount Park Tickets – Organize and place bulk orders for discount ticket requests for various Amusement Parks and coordinate distribution of tickets.

    Family Fun Night/Trunk or Treat – Plan and organize a one evening Trunk or Treat or Family Fun Night event in October at Washington School.

    Field Day – Field Day is a school wide, one day event, usually held in May or June.  The committee chairs’ responsibilities are to support Ms. Zeman in the planning and coordination of the day’s events and volunteers.

    Fifth Grade Promotion– The committee chairs are responsible for overseeing and coordinating all of the planning and sub-committees for all the special Fifth grade specific activities and events throughout the year.

    Food Allergy/Celiac Committee - Help collaborate with other HSA committees and staff to ensure safe options are available for students with food restrictions. Bring ideas and concerns to the committee and school for discussion.


    Health & Wellness – Coordinate and plan Health & Wellness activities and events for the school community.

    Helping Hands – Coordinate and organize an annual community service project for all grade levels. A week of awareness activities takes place during the year, usually in late winter or spring.


    Holiday Shoppe – Plan, organize and run this event in December where kids can buy inexpensive gifts.  Responsibilities include coordinating and organizing crafts, baked goods, and other gifts for sale to our Washington School children, family members, and faculty; as well as decoration of the Washington School Gym and coordination of volunteers.  Alternatively, chairs can choose to contract with a company to come in and run the event. 

    Ice Cream – Organize weekly Ice Cream sales inventory, and volunteers (Fridays during lunch periods).

    JCHS Scholarship – Attend monthly evening scholarship meetings and give report to HSA.  Help publicize fundraising for district wide scholarships awarded by JCHS Scholarship Fund.

    Literacy – Help develop programs and contests that highlight fun of reading and writing.  Coordinate the Library Volunteer program.

    Membership – Coordinate and execute the annual HSA membership drive in the Fall. 


    Passive Fundraising – Help plan and coordinate events that allow families to support HSA through routine spending for example: Clothing Drive, Stop n Shop (reactivated) etc.

    Project HERO- Plan and coordinate various activities and assemblies to promote kindness. Help run the kindness club involving the students in the goal to promote kindness.

    Publicity- The main responsibilities for the chairperson of this committee include but are not limited to the following: distributing permission forms to all Washington School families at the beginning of the school year for use of child(ren)’s photo and names in published articles pertaining to HSA sponsored events; attending all HSA sponsored events; taking pictures at these events; writing “summaries” about the attended events and submitting summaries along with pictures to local newspaper and internet outlets.

    Pumpkin Painting-- Pumpkin Painting is a ONE DAY ONLY event in October where children bring their own pumpkins to decorate with a parent. This annual HSA sponsored event is a fun way to get ready for Halloween!  Chairs are needed to provide and organize pumpkin painting supplies and decorations (there is a budget for this), coordinate volunteers, and to run the event.  Other responsibilities include organizing a raffle, contests, and possible faculty competition.

    School Apparel – Responsible for organizing and running the sales and distribution of school apparel and logo items.

    School Directory – Prepare, put together, proofread, and coordinate distribution of the annual directory.

    School Supplies – Prepare and distribute information about pre-ordering school supplies for the upcoming school year. 


    Social Media - Post school information on the Washington School facebook page on a weekly basis with permission from our principal.

    Sunshine/Hospitality – Responsibilities include sending cards to school families and staff when needed, handling retirements of staff members; planning and putting together the Teachers’ Holiday Breakfast (December) and the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon (June).

    Talent Show – Plan, coordinate and put together this event which showcases Washington School students’ various talents in the spring.  Many volunteers are needed to help run the show.

    Washington Weekly Edit and put together the H.S.A. weekly newsletter that comes out every Friday. Manage the HSA website. This requires a bi-weekly/monthly commitment & excellent computer skills.

    Water Supply – Order, track and distribute water needed by all committees throughout the year for the following events. Carnival, Pumpkin Painting, HSA Meetings, 5th Grade Promotion etc.

    Welcome Committee - Responsible for welcoming and informing new families (new to Washington School and/or new to the H.S.A) about the Washington School H.S.A and all of the events and activities we sponsor.  Need to be willing to solicit new faces and encourage and invite people to become involved by attending H.S.A. meetings and volunteering for events.  Responsible for helping with volunteer sign ups at Open House Night in the Fall.


    The Following are not formal H.S.A. Committees, but these volunteers will be the H.S.A liaisons supporting the teachers/staff who oversee the programs listed below:


    Book Fair/work with Mrs. Weiss   


    Kids Heart Challenge/work with Ms. Zeman 

    Kids Heart challenge is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. They raise money to help prevent death to heart conditions, heart disease and stroke. Ms. Zeman’s focus is on movement activities to stay healthy. Volunteers will work with Ms. Zeman to create a sign-up genius, help manage volunteers, distribute and bag prizes for the students. This event takes place during school hours.
