• Hello!  I'm Mr. McLaughlin and I've been teaching at Grover Cleveland Middle School since 2012.  I'm very excited about having this wonderful opportunity to teach 8th Grade Social Studies.
I graduated from The College of New Jersey in May 2012 with Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude.  At TCNJ, I majored in History and Secondary Education and minored in USA Studies.  In 2010, I interned in the Registrar Department of the Newark Museum, and cataloged historical photographs from 19th and 20th century Newark.  Also, at TCNJ I wrote an honors thesis in history, and delivered paper presentations at many different conferences.  In 2012, I was awarded the Bernice Samalonis Scholarship for Achievement in Social Studies Education from the Middle States Council on Social Studies.  Also, I won the Paul A. Stellhorn New Jersey History Award from the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance for a paper entitled, "A View from the Chalkboard: Trenton School Desegregation and the Struggle of Black Teachers in the pre-Brown Era, 1944-1954"--this paper was later published in the April 2013 TCNJ Journal of Student Scholarship (In 2017, it helped inspire a TCNJ student campaign to rename Paul Loser Hall to Trenton Hall.  For more information, see Recommendation of President Gitenstein to the Board of Trustees to rename Paul Loser Hall and TCNJ building that honored segregationalist renamed Trenton Hall).
I earned my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Caldwell University in 2019.  I received the Sr. Mary John Kearney Award for Outstanding Master Thesis for 2018 for my project entitled, "The Impact of Game-like Learning on Content Comprehension and Retention in an Eighth Grade Social Studies Classroom," at the Caldwell University Honors Convocation.
I grew up in West Caldwell, and I went to Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools.  I went to Washington School, Grover Cleveland Middle School, and James Caldwell High School.  At JCHS, I played on the Soccer, Lacrosse, Baseball, Winter Track, Golf and Bowling teams.  I was also a member of the Concert Band (clarinet), Jazz Band (alto saxophone), and Newspaper Club.
I am a big New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.  In the summer, I do all sorts of DIY projects around the house.  I enjoy reading, running, hiking, golf, ultimate frisbee, escape rooms, and playing the guitar in my free time.  My wife is a Special Education teacher.  We have a dog named Leonardo da Vinci McLaughlin (we just call him Leo).
