Book Advertisement (Ad) Project Description

Due Dates:

September 29th:  You should have finished reading your book that you will use for the book ad.

October 2nd:  1st draft of summary is due.  I will review your summary and then return it to you so that you may write the final copy on the index card that I will supply for you.  On this day I will also give you a large piece of paper to use for your ad.

October 6,7,8:  Book Ads are due any of these days.

Instructions

To promote the sale of books, publishers often run advertisements in newspapers and certain magazines. As a reader, you often recommend books to other readers. For your first independent reading project, you are to create an advertisement for a book you have read this school term. This is your chance to influence others to read a book that you loved, so choose carefully. Make sure you choose a book you really enjoyed and remember well. Make sure you can write in specific detail about why this book is one other people should read.

Steps for Creating your Book Ad

Choose your book to promote. You may need to sign this book out from the library again for a few nights to work on your project.

Write only 6 to 8 sentences summarizing the story. Since you cannot tell the events of the story in only 6-8 sentences, tell about the book in a general way. For example, This is a story about friendship. Tell about the setting, which includes where the story took place and when, and then talk about characters. Lastly, mention the problem of the story. DO NOT give away the ending of the story!!

Design your ad on scrap paper or in your reading notebook. You must use the list on the back of this paper stating what a good book ad must include and what is optional. Including optional items in your ad will most likely make for a better ad and possibly a better grade.

Check all spelling for accuracy. Check the title and author of the book too!

In class get a piece of final copy paper. Transfer the design to the final paper. Color it so that the ad will be attractive and draw the attention of other readers.

Hand it in by the due date written at the top of this project sheet and your planner. (If you are late, points will be deducted.)

In class we will review professional book ads from newspapers and magazines. Notice that the ads are not all the same, but they do all include certain things. As we review these ads, let’s make a list of the things that must be included in all book ads. Next, let’s list the things that may be used in an ad but are not absolutely necessary

Don’t forget to use some advertising techniques we discussed such as color, use of images or pictures, catchy slogans, size of text, a boarder around the ad itself, etc. BE NEAT!!!

Have fun. If you enjoy what you are doing, it will show in your work.
