School Facts

Washington School is an active learning environment where highly trained and dedicated teachers interact with students to promote growth, development, and a life-long love of learning. Our curriculum is rich and challenging, while our school ethos encourages appreciation of the individual child. Our school is a community dedicated to the development of the full potential of each student --- academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and aesthetically.

The kindergarten program is developmental and allows each child to become a part of the school. Mathematics and reading readiness join the other disciplines in a thematic presentation. Formal reading instruction begins in grade one. Emphasis is placed upon the language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing) as an integrated whole throughout the grades. In mathematics, concepts and computation are linked, as problem solving is emphasized. Science and social studies are presented thematically and are often integrated with the other subjects.

Special subjects include art, library, music, and physical education. The orchestra, band, and chorus perform two concerts a year. Special area teachers guide students to further develop their multiple intelligences.

There are Internet accessible computers and printers in each classroom. Educational software is utilized to support the curriculum, and technology is used for writing, editing, and publishing. The utilization of computer technology to enhance instruction and promote student learning is a top priority.

The district employs a systemic five-year plan for curriculum evaluation, revision and implementation.  All students are appropriately challenged as instruction accommodates varying needs and abilities. The services of our Special Education teachers are available to those students who need them.

Volunteers play an active role in our school. Parental contributors include library assistants, field trip chaperones, special lunch helpers, reading buddies, and more. The Washington School H/SA is a successful organization that provides funds for cultural arts assemblies, field trip assistance, and many gifts to our school. The HSA and its leadership play an invaluable role and make Washington School complete.

Due to forecasted inclement weather, the Washington School Carnival has been rescheduled for FRIDAY, Oct. 3, 4:30-6:30.
