Jefferson School
(973) 228 - 5994
Welcome to the new school year! I want your child to have a fun and successful
year in Kindergarten. Above I have listed the school phone number. Please feel
free to contact me if there is anything you would like to discuss. However, I am
not available during the school day for phone calls/conferences unless scheduled
ahead of time. Please email, send a note or leave a phone message with your
concerns and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
School Hours:
The AM class begins promptly at 8:45 and ends at 11:30a.m. The PM class begins
promptly at 12:15 and ends at 3:00 p.m. On 1/2 days both AM and PM students will
attend school from 8:45 – 11:30 a.m.
Attendance:
A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent,
and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is
influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without
tardiness is a key.
Transportation:
If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus to after care or you
wish for your child to be picked up by someone other than yourself, you must
send a written note or contact the office prior to dismissal at (973) 228 -
5994. Do not rely on your child to tell us this information, because children
may relay information incorrectly.
School Work:
Please look in your child’s backpack each day. I will send all school news by
way of your child in their HOME/SCHOOL FOLDER. These folders will come home
daily and are to be sent back each day. Please send all notes, money and other
important items you want me to find in your child’s folder. Also, make sure all
work and notes being returned to school are labeled with your child’s name. Be
positive and value the work your child has done at school.
Snack:
Please provide a small healthy snack each morning/afternoon. Please do not send
in flip top canned items, as they are very sharp; boxed drinks or plastic
containers only; no thermoses, glass, sodas, or Capri Sun drinks. Please make
sure that the snack is ready to eat as time is precious, and we will not be able
to cut or peel fruit, open, sort food, etc. Please remember to send in forks,
spoons, straws, etc. if they are needed. Snack containers need to be labeled.
The school does not supply snacks or utensils.
*Please remember our classroom is peanut/nut free. We cannot
allow the children to eat anything containing peanut butter or any type of
nuts in our classroom. If a snack containing nuts is sent to school with
your child, it will be sent home. If you have any questions you may contact
Ms. Rivera, our school nurse.
Milk money:
You will receive information about snack milk from the office. If you are
interested, milk is offered each day during snack. There is the option of 2% or
skim milk. This needs to be ordered and paid for ahead of time.
Money:
Periodically, your child will bring money to school for milk, field trips,
orders, etc. When sending money to school, be sure to use an envelope or zip
lock bag CLEARLY MARKED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME, CLASS, WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR,
AND THE AMOUNT ENCLOSED. Please send exact change when sending cash.
Birthdays:
Please do not send in birthday party invitations to school unless the entire
class is invited. Although it might seem convenient to distribute invitations
this way, it can result in hurt feelings for those who are not invited. Please
visit our Birthday Book Club link for
more ideas.
Star of the Week:
Your child will be recognized as our ‘Star of the Week’ one week this school
year. When it is your child’s turn, you will receive a detailed note about this
event. I am asking parents to help their child complete the Star Packet and
create a poster that includes family photos and anything else you can think of
that will help us learn about your STAR child! Your child will get to present
his or her poster and hang it in our classroom for the week. Parents are welcome
to visit our class for 15 minutes at the end of the week to share a story with
the class! Please check the Star of the Week schedule to mark your calendars
ahead of time. Please do not send goody bags or treats to school.
They cannot be distributed and will have to be sent home.
Kinder Bear:
During the year, our class bear will have a chance to spend the weekend with
your child. During the weekend your child can take the bear anywhere… to the
store, to the playground, to the movies, to a relative’s house, etc. Your child
will write small journal entries (pictures and writing) describing the
activities they’ve done together. After the weekend your child will tell the
class about his/her adventures with Kinder Bear. Please try to have your child
do as much as he/she can without your help. You may help with spelling but I
would like them to write as much as they can on their own.
Behavior and Discipline:
I believe in having high expectations for the children to follow classroom rules
and to help them understand the reasons behind rules. I want all of the children
to have the opportunity to learn and for no student to keep another student from
being able to learn. I strive to provide a safe and comfortable learning
environment for the children in which we work and live as a team in our
classroom.
Our classroom rules include:
Always walk
Be kind to others
Raise your hand to speak
Listen while others are talking
Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
Always do your best work
Daily behavior plan:
As you know, good behavior and learning go hand in hand. Simple class rules have
been established to ensure your child experiences a positive and safe learning
environment.
Even at the young age of 5, children need to learn the importance of accepting
responsibility for their actions. In our classroom, we keep track of our
behavior with a balloon chart. If a child has difficulty following a rule or
directions, he/she is first given a verbal reminder about the correct behavior.
If the same child continues to have difficulty later in the day, he/she will not
color in the balloon labeled for that day of the week. After 3 reminders, the
child must take a break from the group setting. If at anytime unacceptable
behavior continues a "Think-About-It" sheet will be sent home. The sheet will be
filled out with both parent and child and returned to school the next day.
Continued difficulty will be referred to the office, and parents will be
notified.
The balloon cards will go home on Friday and must be signed and returned on
Monday. The amount of balloons colored in will determine each student’s award
(usually a weekly trip to our class treasure chest).
We also have a group behavior system where the class can earn special treats
when working well as a team.
Fighting and other disruptive behaviors that keep others from learning or
dangerous behaviors require removal of a student from the classroom and must be
reported immediately to our Principal, Mr. Ayers. I will contact you immediately
if a situation occurs in which your child must visit with Mr. Ayers.
In addition, I will always contact you by phone if there is ever a situation
that needs to be discussed. It is important to me that we keep our lines of
communication open and work together to meet the needs of your child.
