Adolescence can be a fun, rewarding, exciting time of life. It’s a period of time when teenagers prepare to launch into the realm of young adulthood. Many young people and their families experience stress and conflict during this time. This is a natural part of growing up. However, some problems that young people experience during adolescence may impede their emotional health & well-being.
The goal of the Student Assistance Program is to provide counseling services and education to promote students’ emotional health, self-esteem and positive engagement in school and community. We aim to support the whole child by offering support towards an array of adjustment and mental health issues, including the prevention of substance use/abuse.
The Student Assistance Counselors have expertise in a variety of emotional and mental health issues, including depression, grief/loss, coping with divorce, anger management, anxiety, and substance use/abuse.
THE COUNSELORS
Mary Burke Cunningham, Student Assistance Coordinator, is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 15 years experience working as a counselor in educational settings. Ms. Cunningham holds two Master’s degrees in psychological counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is experienced in providing both individual and family counseling, as well as facilitating support groups and parent education/coaching. Ms. Cunningham provides services to JCHS students and families on a full-time basis during the school year. She is available to meet with parents during the school day and by appointment in the evening.
