Math Stuff
Course Description:
This course promotes mathematical skills through a balance of math computation and problem solving activities which connect to real world experiences. To master standards in number sense, data and statistical analysis, geometry, algebra, and mathematical reasoning areas as well as understanding how to conceptualize and apply these skills. Student’s skills in numerical operations, measurement, and estimation will be applied throughout the course.
Concepts Explored This Year:
I. Number Sense
Problem solving steps, patterns, estimation, order of operations, variables, exponents, solving equations
II. Probability and Statistics
Frequency tables, scales, intervals, bar graphs, line graphs, circle graphs, interpreting graphs, making predictions, misleading statistics, coordinate maps, averages, theoretical probability, experimental probability, samples, finding outcomes, independent events
III. Decimals
Measurement, place value, comparing and ordering, rounding, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
IV. Fractions
Divisibility, prime factorization, greatest common factor, simplifying, mixed numbers, least common multiple, comparing and ordering, fraction/decimal equivalents, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time
V. Ratios & Proportions
Ratios, rates, solving proportions, scale drawings, percents, percent/decimal/fraction equivalents, percent of a number
VI. Geometry
Angles, two-dimensional figures, symmetry, congruence, similarity, transformations, area, circumference, perimeter, three-dimensional figures, surface area, volume
Special Activities!!!!
Pumpkinology, NCAA March Madness Brackets, and more!
**There will be continuous connections to the real world in math!
Top 5 Things You Must Know for Mr. Saito's Math Class:
1. Bring Pencils! Expect to make a lot of mistakes (aka. learning opportunities).
2. Do your homework! If you don't practice, you won't improve.
3. Use quizzes wisely! Like scrimmages, it's test prep...what do you need to improve?
4. Tests are your "game", "recital", "speech"! It's your time to show what you can do!
5. Be cool, ask for help! I'm available before and after school...or ask a friend that "gets it", or a parent.
