Dear Students and Parents,

            Welcome to middle school and the sixth grade!  You are about to begin a new chapter in your life.  The following is an effort to provide you and your parents with information that I hope will be useful.  After reading this, please sign on the back and return.

 

About Mr. Saito…

*Graduated the University of Michigan…GO BLUE!!!

*Has 9 years of teaching experience (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades).

*Taught 6th Grade at GCMS for 6 years (Math/Science/Social Studies).

*Freshmen boys basketball coach at JCHS

*Hoopapalooza advisor  (GCMS 3-on-3 Basketball tourney)

 

Mr. Saito’s Expectations…

1. Respect yourself and others.

2. Give 100% effort at all times.

3. Always strive to improve yourself.

4. Be an effective member of our class “team”.

5. Always be prepared, but flexible (You are responsible for you!).

 

Sixth Grade Classroom Rules:

  1. Listen quietly while others are speaking.
  2. Keep hands, feet, and unkind words to yourself.
  3. No food, gum, or candy during class time.
  4. Arrive to class prepared and on time.
  5. Respect the classroom environment.

 

Consequences:

*First offense = Warning

*Second offense = Appropriate Consequence or Teacher Detention

*Third offense = Office Referral

*It is the students’ responsibility to notify their parent(s) if they have

  detention, and to explain the reason.

 

Parental Involvement:

*Making homework and studying a priority

*Checking the Homework Hotline and your child’s homework planner.

*Calling/e-mailing Mr. Saito if there are questions or concerns

*Insuring a balance between academics, extra-curricular, and social activities for your child

 

Miscellaneous:

*Wait quietly outside the classroom in a line before class.

*Do not bring any non-academic items (i.e. purses, phones, toys) into class.

*Always have a pass, if you are late.

*Students are encouraged to use the bathroom and water fountain in-between classes.

*Before school, go directly to cafeteria until 8:25…unless, teacher appt. or music practice.

 

Daily Schedule:

8:30-8:45         Homeroom

8:45-9:45         Math 1/Language Arts 1

9:45-10:45       Math 2/Language Arts 2

10:45-11:15     HR extension

11:15-12:00     Cycle (Health/Music/Keyboarding/Art)

12:00-12:30     Lunch

12:30-1:15       Gym/Spanish

1:15-2:00         Science 1 & Social Studies 1

2:00-2:45         Science 2 & Social Studies 2

 

Locker Schedule:

*Students are not permitted to visit lockers during class.  OK times: 10:45, 1:15

 

Grading:  A (100-90), B (89-80), C (79-70), D (69-60), F (59-0)

*Students who earn a 80% or less on an assignment/quiz/test/project can receive a higher grade after seeking extra help from Mr. Saito.

 

Math:

*Curriculum: Statistics, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios, Proportions, Percents, Geometry, Probability, (Pumpkinology in October)

*All math assignments must be completed in pencil.  Sharpen before class.

*Grading: Tests = 60%, Quizzes = 20%, Homework/Classwork 20% (subject to change).

 

Science: 

*Curriculum: Scientific Method, Astronomy, Environmental Awareness & Ecology, Weather & Atmosphere, Earth’s Changing Surface

*Grading: Varies depending on unit/project…see unit/project overviews.

 

Homework Policy:

*Assignments are written at the side of the room & recorded on the Hotline & website daily.

*Absent Policy: Extra time is given to work missed due to illness, religious holidays, and any other reasonable excuse.

*It is the student’s responsibility to get all assignments & notes.  Late work will be penalized.
