Directions:  Answer each question completely.  Show all work.

 

1)  Karen was helping plan the Spanish Club’s trip to Spain.  On a recent trip, the currency exchange rate was 128.46 Spanish pesetas per one U.S. dollar.  At that rate, how many pesetas would she receive for $50 in US currency?

 

 

128.46 x 50 = 6423 pesetas

 

 

2)  At the Atlanta Olympics, U.S. track star Michael Johnson set an Olympic record of 43.49 seconds in the 400-meter event.  To the nearest tenth, find his speed in meters per second.

 

 

400 ÷ 43.49 = 9.19 = about 9.2 meters per second

 

 

 

3)  A blue whale, the largest creature to live on Earth, can weigh up to 153.47 tons.  An eighteen-wheeler tractor and semi-trailer, fully loaded, can weigh up to 48.5 tons.  How much heavier is the blue whale?

 

 

153.47 – 48.5 = 104.97 tons

 

 

4)     Find the sum of 1798, 0.0785, and 24.895.

 

1798 + 0.0785 + 24.895 =  1,822.9735  (remember to line up decimals and place value value)
