Miss Shaeffer’s Classroom Guidelines

Welcome!!

Supplies Needed:

·         3 ring binder with three dividers

·         2 pocket folder with holes for binder

·         pencils

·         pocket pencil sharpener

·         protractor

·         calculator with square root function (a scientific calculator is sufficient, you DO NOT need a graphing calculator)

**The calculator and protractor are for at home use and do not need to be brought to class.  We have class sets of both to use in school.

Grading:

Each marking period grade will be determined by your performance on tests, quizzes, projects, and homework assignments.  I will average your grades together in the following manner: tests are double grades, quizzes are single grades, projects can be test or quiz grades and will be announced as assigned, and homework will count as one test grade toward your marking period average.  We will have one quiz every Friday.  If it is time for a chapter test, it will most likely be scheduled on a Friday and replace that week’s scheduled quiz.  The final grade is the average of the four marking period grades.

Homework:

Everyone will begin with a 100 homework average at the beginning of each marking period!  Each student is excused for missing one homework assignment per marking period.  For each assignment missed after that, five points will be deducted from your homework average.  The entire homework assignment must be complete to receive full credit.  If more than 75% of the problems are not completed or at least attempted, that is considered a homework miss.  There is no partial credit, no late assignments accepted, and returning to your locker to retrieve your homework is not permitted during class.

Basic Skills:

To ensure that each student has mastered the basic skills necessary to be successful in math this year, a basic skills quiz will be given weekly.  The basic skills quizzes are short (approx. 5 questions each) and designed to be completed in a limited amount of time.  These quizzes will assess concepts studied in previous years.  There will be one basic skills quiz each week of each marking period and will be worth 10 points.  At the end of each marking period, the basic skills quizzes will be compiled for one quiz grade.

Midterm and Final Exam:

A cumulative midterm exam will be given at the end of the second marking period.  This exam will count as one and a half test grades (or three quiz grades) toward your second marking period average.  A cumulative final exam will also be given in the same fashion at the end of the fourth marking period.

Absence Policy:

If you are absent from class or school, you are responsible for coming to see me before or after school to get the work you missed.  For each day absent, you have two days to make-up the work.

By signing these classroom guidelines, you are acknowledging that you are aware of the rules and will try to the best of your ability to adhere to them.  I just know this is the beginning of a great year!
