Statement of Philosophy

Adopted, June, 1999

Information literacy- the ability to find and use information- is the keystone of lifelong learning. Creating a foundation for lifelong learning is at the heart of the school library media program. Just as the school library media center has moved far beyond a room with books to become an active, technology-rich learning environment with an array of information resources, the school library media specialist today focuses on the process of leaning rather that dissemination of information. The library media program combines effective learning and teaching strategies and activities with information access skills. Information availability will undoubtedly continue to mushroom into the next century, which will make a strong school library media program even more essential to help its users acquire the skills they will need to harness and use information for a productive and fulfilling life.

The school library media specialist can use the information literacy standards for student learning to create and maintain a program for a broad learning community- students, teachers, administrators, parents, and the neighborhood- that will support lifelong learning.
