Kindergarten Readiness

 

The following is a list of skills/ activities, which your child should be able to accomplish for a successful beginning to her/his Kindergarten year. Please work with your child to help her/him achieve these goals.  Many of these skills are basic development which the 4-5 year old child, with help, will easily learn.  Work with your child so that s/he is able to:

 

1.       State his/her first and last names.

2.     Give street (mailing) address and telephone number.

3.     Give birth date (month, day).

4.     Recognize and name colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, brown, black and gray.

5.     Recognizes and can name shapes: circle, square, rectangle, and triangle.

6.     Recognizes and names pictures of: girl, boy, cat, dog, key, cup, apple, flower, leaf, car, airplane, bird. Etc.

7.     Identifies body parts by pointing to head, elbows, legs, feet, chin, shoulders, eyes, ears, fingers, waist, and wrists.

8.     Count by rote: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

9.     Match a quantity with a number: 3, 1, 5, 2, 4

10.  Recite the alphabet.

11.   Follow one step directions.

12.  Follow two step directions.

13.  Grasp/hold pencil with fingers.

14.  Hold scissors correctly.

15.  Stand on one foot for 5 seconds.  Stand on the other foot for a moment.

16.  Stand on one-foot w/ eyes closed for a moment.  Stand on the other foot w/ eyes closed for a moment.

17.  Take 2 hops on one foot.

18.  Walk forward heel-to-toe 4 steps.

19.  Walk backward toe-to-heel 4 steps.

20.Print first name.

21.  Speak with complete sentences.

22.Copy simple figures shown, for example: X  P   T  +
