 Student's entering first grade should be able to do the following.

Continue to practice these skills throughout the summer to help your child's

Kindergarten - First grade transition

  • Follow 1, 2 and 3 step directions as soon as they are given
  • Transition from one direction to the next without being side tracked
  • Understand and adjust to routines and also accept changes in routines
  • Speak and listen to a variety of audiences
  • Homework – working independently, following all the directions correctly, hand in on time
  • First and last name on all work, using upper and lower case letters correctly
  • Be aware of concepts of print (left to right progression, return sweep, top to bottom progression, spacing between words
  • Letters - recognition of upper and lower case, letter sounds and letter formation
  • Recognize similarities and differences in initial and final sounds in words
  • Differentiate between consonants and vowels
  • Read sight words
  • Rhyming words
  • Locate the title of a book
  • Recall the characters, setting and basic plot of a story
  • Sequencing (First, next. Last) and retelling
  • Kinder-spelling (Use invented spelling to express their thoughts in writing 
  • Produce legible writing with correct spacing of letters and words
  • Days of the week, months of the year, and seasons
  • Recognition and formation of numbers 1 – 31
  • Count 0 - 100
  • Recognize colors, shapes and color words
  • Understand the concepts of more, fewer, greater, less, before, after, and between
  • Math vocabulary – addition, subtraction, equals
  • Construct and continue a pattern
  • Recognize coins and their value
  • Solve simple addition and subtraction facts
  • Identify address, birthday, full name, and telephone number
  • Use a calendar (days of the week and months of the year)
  • Telling time to the hour
