WHAT IS IT?
What is it?

-a fat soluble vitamin

What foods provide it?

- lettuce, green tea, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, cheddar cheese, oats and select fruits and vegetables

 Recommended intake?

- 60-80 micrograms per day

Who's at risk for deficiency?

-infants and those with significant liver damage or disease and those with disorders of fat malabsorption

Who may need more Vitamin K in order to prevent deficiency?

- infants who are exclusively breast fed

Current Issues and Controversies?

- infants given prophylactic drugs (usually intramuscular vitamin K) in their first week may increase risk of childhood cancer and leukaemia

Health Risk of too much Vitamin K?

- a large overdose may result in liver damage or anaemia

Vitamin K intakes and healthful diets?

- a balanced diet of leafy vegetables, meats, and everything else in the food pyramid
