what is it? vitamin B 12 has the most
complex structure of all the vitamins. its job is to help keep the
brain, nervous system and metabolism running properly. it also
helps with the formation of red blood cells. what foods provide it? vitamin B 12 is present in meet, dairy products and eggs. researchers have been looking for plants that provide B 12 as well. so far they have found that seaweeds, algae and fermented soya products all contain the vitamin. Recommended amount? the required daily amount of vitamin B 12 for ages 0-14 is 0.3-1.2 micrograms. for ages fifteen and up its in 1.5 micrograms. breast feeding women should try to have 2 micrograms daily. B 12 deficiency? vitamin B 12 deficiency can limpair you both physically and psychologically. some physical symptoms include muscle aches, weakness and fatigue, vision, touch and taste impairiment. some psychological symptoms include memory loss, depression, irritablily, disorientation and hallucinations. who needs B 12? everyone needs B 12 in their diet, but some special cases may need more than a normal dose. such cases include people with pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, elderly and vegitarians. folic acid and vitamin B 12 deficiency: folic acid can be used to treat the anemia caused by B 12 deficiency but cannot help the nerve damage. also if taken in large doses, folic acid can actually trigger the same damage that B 12 deficiency can cause. B 12, homocysteine and cardiovascular disease: vitamin B 12 is used to help lower the levels of homocysteine in the blood whose levels when too high can cause cardiovascular disease.
