Course Overview: This course is designed to efficiently prepare students to pass the High School Proficiency Assessment, reading and writing sections. Reading and writing will be emphasized in an effort to fill in gaps and strengthen existing skills. Goals of the program will include development of skills in writing, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, literary analysis, research techniques, speaking and listening and word processing. In addition, students will be exposed to and master critical thinking skills through discrete instruction and practical application.
Students should be able to:
· Decode at grade level
· Comprehend short passage material at grade level.
· Identify and apply literary terms.
· Demonstrate appropriate speaking and listening skills in classroom discussions.
· Use appropriate mechanics.
· Write a coherent sentence
· Write narrative, persuasive and information paragraphs on any given topic.
· Compose a 5-paragraph essay.
· Use research skills and resources.
· Apply study skills efficiently on all assignments.
Students are responsible for:

· Projects
· Quizzes/tests
· Computer activities
· Students must also come prepared to class

Grading System:
Homework assignments are usually 5-10 points
Tests, quizzes and projects are worth 50-100 points.
Makeup assignments:
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up all missed assignments. Students are encouraged to call the Homework Hotline, phone a classmate or e-mail me to find out what was missed. No points will be deducted if the homework is made up within 2 days upon his/her return. If a student does not hand in an assignment, he or she should hand the assignment in a timely manner. However, points will be deducted. If the assignment is not turned in within a week from its due date the student will receive a zero.
Please be aware that it is the student’s responsibility to turn in missed assignments. The student is also expected to collect all work/notes missed during his/her absence.
Makeup Tests/Quizzes:
In the event a students is absent on the day a test/quiz has been scheduled—assuming he/she was present in class at the time the test date was announced, or any days following the announcement- he/she will make up the test/quiz the day he/she returns.
*Prolonged absences due to extenuating circumstances will be addressed accordingly.
Punctuality:
Students are expected to be on time every day (unless they have a legitimate pass). They should be seated and ready to work when the bell rings. If a student has an un-excused lateness, he/she will be assigned a detention that must be completed within 2 days or the student will receive a referral. If a student is habitually late to class a referral will be submitted to Administration.
If a student cuts a class, continually causes disruption in the class, is continually late to class, exhibits rude or disrespectful behavior, or breaks school rules a referral will be submitted to Administration.
