World Cultures

Cultures that we will be creating artwork inspired by include; Africa, India, China, and Japan

Africa

Each student will learn about the various reasons why masks were used in ceremonies in Africa, as well as to create a mask of a spirit of their own design or a mask that they were inspired by.

India

Students will learn about cycles of life and how it can be represented by Mandala from India.  Each student will have the opportunity to create their own Mandala in class centering on a cycle of their own choice.

China

Every student will learn about the Chinese Zodiac Calendar in order to create a Chinese silk scroll illustrating their own Chinese Zodiac animal design.  These scrolls will also illustrate the students month and day in which they were born to make them more unique.

Japan

Each student will have the opportunity to experiment with Japanese Sumi-e (ink) painting.  This form of painting is designed to create a very calm environment that promotes concentration and respect for the subject matter that is being painted.
